I met up with my buddy Jacob from Cynic Abroad in Australia to see what the land down under was like. We decided that the best way to see this wild country and its crazy animals would be to roadtrip through it.
In all, we did 3 tours. One all around Tasmania, another from Melbourne to Sydney, and final one from Brisbane to Cairns (for this leg we actually got an RV for FREE and you can learn how to do so yourself in this post).
After these incredible experiences we both agreed that roadtrips really are the best way to see Australia, and here’s why:
1. You get to experience a lot more of their awesome wildlife
Our first encounter with one of my favorite Australian wildlife, the (AWESOME) possum.
Jacob chillin with a chilled out wallaby at Wineglass bay. A seagull stopped by to hang too.
2. Lunch breaks get a lot more interesting
Cooking, working, and traveling all at the same time. KILLIN’ IT!!!
Having a snack on top of Cradle Mountain.
It just so happened to be Valentine’s day 🙂
3. Getting around to different spots is super easy
The Twelve Apostles.
Opera house in Sydney, Australia
The Tessellated Pavement in Tasmania
4. You stop in a lot of random places and make your own fun
We found this random great white shark museum with some fun stuff outside.
Jacob suggested we pose so it looks like I was holding it. This was the extent of my compliance.
Waking up and pretending we know how to do yoga.
Random swimming hole up by Cairns.
Some lady was making a sign for their store and I offered to help.
It was a Reef and Beef special which meant shrimp and steak. I drew a prawn high fiving a cow 🙂
5. You get to see a lot of unplanned beauty
This was easily one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. Photo captures about 50% of it’s awesomeness.
Ok, the window streaks suck, but the view was nice.
But if Im completely honest with you, it does have a few downsides…
Gas isn’t cheap.
Really bad traffic and one lane roads.
Some “bogan” was moving his whole house (see this post for definition of bogan).
Jacob’s stuck-in-traffic face.
My stuck-in-traffic face.
Inevitably, the trip has to come to an end…
Still, I think the good outweighs the bad by a LONG shot.
